Design Doctors’ experience encompasses profitable property developments and land subdivisions, completed in their own right, as well as providing professional services to clients in a variety of industries including the health, hospitality, accommodation, industrial, commercial, entertainment and retail sectors. Several successful business ventures include start-ups in primary health care, radiology, day surgery, early childhood education and short-term, self-contained accommodation.
Holgar & Holgar Architects first opened its doors in 1957 – a husband and wife team comprising Polish emigres, John and Helen Holgar, Voight’s parents, who had been displaced after serving in the Polish Resistance and armed forces in WW2.
Holgar & Holgar grew to be a successful architectural practice renowned for high-end, luxurious residential projects. From the 1950’s through to the ’90’s, Holgar & Holgar introduced International Modern style buildings the like of which Melbourne had not yet seen. Many still exist and are treasured, with the moniker “designed by Holgar & Holgar” attracting a premium price for their vendors.
The second generation of Voight and Teresa Holgar were part of the Melbourne office in the ’70’s. Although the doors are no longer open in Melbourne, John and Helen have been recognised in academic publications for their unique contribution to Australian architecture. Some of their work is held by the National Gallery of Victoria.
Keeping the Tradition Alive
After working in Melbourne, Sydney and overseas, Voight commenced in private practice in Brisbane in 1983. Teresa, his wife, joined him in 1984. Teresa had also gained valuable prior architectural expertise in other offices in Brisbane, Sydney and New Caledonia. Holgar & Holgar Architects continues providing architectural services in Brisbane to this day.
The Second Generation
Voight and Teresa created Design Doctors because, after almost 40 continuous years in property, they want to pass on their knowledge. Property has been good to them. Hence they feel obliged to help and educate others, demonstrate the preventive measures that avoid costly and avoidable property ‘accidents’ and see their protégés create healthy, wealthy property portfolios. Hence the name – Design Doctors.
Maintaining the tradition, Voight’s brother, Jack, owns and operates a successful design-and-construct business in South Australia. Teresa’s uncle qualified in architecture with Voight’s parents, first in Rome then in London. Their daughter, Alicia, is an interior designer.
Voight and Teresa have been immersed in design, business and the property industry for most of their lives. Today, meaningful, responsible and profitable design remains a focus they are glad to share. Pursuing a parallel passion, Voight obtained qualifications in clinical hypnotherapy in 2014. He sees design and property creating opportunities for personal growth and self-expression. For an insight into this initiative on a wider scale, visit www.mind-skill.com.
Design Pays Dividends!
The Design Doctors team believes that a good design pays dividends, strategically contributing to a positive financial result. Our team always strives to improve the bottom line in every project.
Meet The Principals
Design Doctors offer their experience in property from the perspective of both genders. Utilising the complementary skills of both leads to a better result.
Voight is a problem-solver with entrepreneurial skills.
“Architecture, above all, trains you to solve multi-faceted, complex problems in creative ways. Considerations include community concerns, feasibility, sustainability, build-ability, site constraints, function and performance, statutory compliance, marketability and design. Add to this list, architecture’s role in manifesting a society’s values and aspirations. These are the many issues architects are trained to grapple with concurrently. Hence the lengthy studies. Architects, like artists, often become all the more relevant with experience”.
Voight is professionally qualified, a registered architect and open-licence builder. Voight’s interests focus on fostering excellence in design, creating viable communities and extending the potential of the individual. He thrives on innovative, fresh ideas and exploring the potential of any challenge.
Voight manages a diversified portfolio and has assisted numerous clients with property strategies and projects ranging in value from $10,000 to $200m. He has been the inspiration behind several successful start-ups across diverse industries. Voight finds satisfaction in improving the bottom line in any assignment he undertakes.

“I am absolutely passionate about achieving good design – not just for its aesthetic value and the pleasure that conveys but for its commercial value too. Great design adds value in more ways than one. It takes skill, experience and care to get it right. We never stop learning and getting better at it all the time”.
In addition to her design, property management expertise and architectural skills, Teresa has also studied project management and holds a real estate certificate of registration. With her real estate contacts developed over years of buying properties herself, Teresa is able to assist clients looking for a Buyer’s Agent. Using a Buyer’s Agent is money well spent for property buyers who do not have the time to do it themselves or lack specific knowledge in the marketplace. It provides a professional ‘second opinion’ before a purchase becomes unconditional. Getting a second opinion from an experienced, unbiased property investor may save you from making the wrong purchase or paying too much.
With extensive building industry knowledge and access to industry resources, Teresa coordinates projects and delivers supplies and services at competitive prices. She strives to add value and design integrity to each project.
